Chevy Colorado vs Ford Ranger: Performance

The Chevy Colorado and Ford Ranger differ significantly in their engine offerings. While the Chevy Colorado has three different ones to choose from, the Ford Ranger only offers one. The engines of the Colorado deliver slightly more power, too, when it comes to horsepower and torque.

While the Ford model’s 2.3L EcoBoost® delivers an impressive 270 horsepower, the Chevy model’s optional 3.6L DOHC V6 engine gives you more at 308 horsepower. The Ford engine does win out in the torque department, given that it provides 310 lb-ft compared to the 275 lb-ft of the Chevy. However, one of the available engines of the Chevy, the 2.8L DuraMax® Turbo-Diesel, will get you up to 369 lb-ft of torque if you prioritize a higher toque number. This diesel 4-cylinder also puts out 181 horsepower.

The final Colorado engine generates 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque from its 2.5L 4-cylinder arrangement.

Colorado vs Ranger: Capability

In terms of towing, the Chevy Colorado wins out slightly. When using the 2.8 DuraMax® engine on a 2-wheel drive vehicle, you’ll be able to tow up to 7,700 pounds. Better yet, when you choose the ZR2 trim, you’ll get the Trailering Package standard with your purchase.

This package provides different equipment you may need to hitch your trailer, like Hitch Guidance and a 7-pin sealed connector for the trailer’s lights and brakes.

The Ford Ranger, on the other hand, comes up slightly short at 7,500 pounds of maximum towing when properly equipped. Although this model offers its own set of trailer packages, none of them come standard for any trim level and must be purchased separately.

Colorado vs Ranger: Technology

When you’re driving around in your new truck, you’re going to want to have some great playlists at the ready, plus voice-activated phone call and text technology. That’s all possible through Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, both of which come standard in the Chevy Colorado.

Unfortunately, they don’t come standard across all trims of the Ford Ranger. Ford’s SYNC® 3 technology—which provides Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™—is optional for the base trim rather than standard like the rest of the trims on the Ranger.

Those playlists aren’t complete without a good audio experience, though. The Chevy Colorado comes standard with a 6-speaker setup, while the base trim of the Ford Ranger only offers a 4-speaker system. As with the other features mentioned above, you’ll have to opt for the Ford model’s available upgrade to access extra speakers.
