What Does the Check Engine Light Mean?

Your vehicle has an Engine Control Unit or ECU. The ECU is a computer that keeps track of various inputs that affect your engine's performance and your vehicle's emissions. It does this by using various sensors. If one of these sensors reports that something is out of the factory specifications for operation, it will trigger the Check Engine Light to come on. It will also store a code that must be read by a code reader.

How Should I React When the Check Engine Light Comes On?

To figure out what the problem is, our technicians will hook a code reader up to your Chevy and read the code that the ECU has stored. How urgently this needs to be done varies:

• If the Check Engine Light is flashing, your engine is likely misfiring. This can damage or destroy the catalytic converter, which is an expensive part to replace. If you notice the Check Engine Light flashing, you should pull over and turn off the engine as soon as you can safely do so. Then, call for a tow.
• If the Check Engine Light is solid, it's not likely an emergency, and you can continue driving to your destination. However, since it may compromise your vehicle's performance or emissions, you should still schedule a service appointment at your earliest convenience.
